About Cambodia & Phnom Penh
Cambodia, is a country located in the southern portion of the Indochina Peninsula in Southeast Asia. Its total landmass is 181,035 square kilometres (69,898 sq mi), bordered by Thailand to the northwest, Laos to the northeast, Vietnam to the east, and the Gulf of Thailand to the southwest.
Phnom Penh is the capital and largest city of Cambodia. Located on the banks of the Tonlé Sap and Mekong River, Phnom Penh has been the national capital since French colonization of Cambodia, and has grown to become the nation’s center of economic and industrial activities, as well as the center of security, politics, cultural heritage, and diplomacy of Cambodia.
Once known as the “Pearl of Asia,” it was considered one of the loveliest French-built cities in Indochina in the 1920s. Phnom Penh, along with Siem Reap and Sihanoukville, are significant global and domestic tourist destinations for Cambodia.
ECONOMICS OF CAMBODIA
Cambodia is getting richer, particularly Phnom Penh. The International Monetary Fund (IMF)lists Cambodia as the 14th most rapidly growing economy in the world in 2011-2012, measured by percent change in GDP.
There are now another 49 high-rise developments scheduled for Phnom Penh, including plans to build a new international university, at least 3 new International Finance Headquarters and over a dozen high-rise luxury apartment condominiums with views over the Mekong River.
PHNOM PENH REAL ESTATE ALONG RIVERSIDE PRICES ON THE RISE
A property expert and investor in the construction sector says that home prices have increased between 10 and 20 per cent so far this year compared to last year.
Meanwhile, Van Chanthorn, managing director of Town City Real Estate, argues that residential prices in Borey Mohasethey, Borey Outhean Basak, Borey North Bridge, the BKK 1 area and residential areas on the outskirts of Phnom Penh have increased by around 10 per cent this year.
